Well I finished one week back at work! We had one day off due to the 4th of July.

Things went much smoother then I anticipated. Rose is adjusting very well to the sitter and more time with daddy. She's letting me sleep enough at night and things couldn't be going any better!

Really feeling a lot of mixed emotions.
It's going to be so hard to leave my precious one every day. Thank God I have a job that I adore to help make it a little easier.
I love being home with Rose, even on the days where it feels isolating. Yesterday was hard, Rose doesn't like the car, so I find myself at home a lot. Alone. I don't do alone well. Hubby got home 3 hours late, adding to the loneliness. I can't wait for the day when Rose does better in the car! 1. Orajel- The FDA warns against this product!
2. Hylands Teething Tablets- Questionable, was recalled a couple years ago for negative health effects that were pretty serious. The problem has been fixed, but I still question the use of the ingredient that cause the problem.
3. Amber Teething Necklace- I got mine from Spark of Amber on Etsy!
4. Homemade Teething cream- I'll be posting a recipe soon!
Today was the first time I've left Rose with anyone other then daddy. It was hard for me, but I'm going back to work in 3 weeks and I know it's crucial for both of us to get used to her being with other people. I was only gone for 2 hours today, and she did very well! SO grateful to have wonderful people I trust that I can leave her with.

People have been asking me to type out my birth story, so here goes!

My dream was to deliver at South Coast Midwifery, in the water. I started out with an OB at 8 weeks pregnant and then moved to South Coast at 25 weeks. Around week 28 they moved into a lovely new facility...it truly is amazing!

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes early in pregnancy. And was put on the GD diet. It didn't control my blood sugar for long and it really packed on the pounds! Having done lower carb diets for so many years, I knew it was just too high in carbs for me! So when the midwife at South Coast Midwifery sent me to Dr. Kurtzman to manage my blood sugars, he wanted to put me on medication right away! I couldn't deliver with the midwives outside of a hospital if I was on meds, so I begged the Dr to let me try to eat the way I felt I should eat! He didn't think I could do it, but he gave me a week to bring my numbers down. I did it! I managed my blood sugars through the rest of my pregnancy through diet and sometimes I had to add in 4am work outs!

Because of my GD I was only allowed to go to 41 weeks before they would want to send me to a hospital for induction. So around week 38 I really started trying all of things that can help you go into labor. Week 39 I woke up with Bells Palsy and went to the ER. They put me on Steroids and Anti Virals. (at the time of this post I still haven't full recovered). I had to tape my eye shut at night while I slept, I had trouble eating and drinking because my mouth wouldn't shut all the way. It was miserable!

Week 40 came and went, I had til Monday morning to go into labor. Wednesday I went to an accupuncturist to get a treatment to bring on labor and treat my Bells. Friday, I went to the midwife clinic and they put a catheter in my cervix to help it dilate. It fell out on it's own about 4 hours later. I gotta tell ya, having that inserted was probably more painful then the labor! I woke up the next morning and went to another place for accupuncture, they did some things a little different, including massage. I was in tears on the table, what they did hurt so bad. But I started having contractions on the table!

We left and went to have lunch, then walked around Hobby Lobby, I was having a lot of contractions at this point, but they seemed sporadic. I decided I should go home and take a nap. I laid in bed for an hour, unable to sleep due to the discomfort. Finally, I felt something weird and decided to get up and go to the bathroom. My water broke! Rose Watch 2013 was activated! (the phrase my friends and family coined for when labor started)

We called the midwives, who didn't want me to come in til my contractions were 3 minutes apart for an hour. They were about 7 at this point. So tried to relax, took a warm shower and let everyone know I was in labor. I had a pretty big support team in place and needed to let them all know!

It was so hot in our house, I ended up laboring on our back patio on a birth ball with support from my husband and sister. They took turns helping me and loading the car up.

By 8pm we were on our way to the Birth Center, in traffic it could easily have taken 30-45 minutes to get there, but thank God I went into labor during non peak hours.

It took us about 15 minutes, it was a very long 15 minutes. My Doula and friend Kelee met us at the car and walked me in.

The birth room had a queen sized bed, a seating area, a faux fireplace, a toilet, sink and a big beautiful tub. I spent the next several hours pacing, squatting and using the birth ball. I wanted to lay down to rest between contractions, but didn't because every time I laid down the contractions were a lot worse! Kelee provided me with massage and essential oils to help naturally relieve the pain. Everyone took turns applying counter pressure to my back during contractions. The counter pressure was about the only thing that really helped. After what seemed like 2-3 hours, I asked if I could get in the tub. So they filled it up and I climbed in.....WOW! The warm water felt amazing! Apparently I dozed off in between contractions and was even snoring. After a while they noticed my contractions were slowing down, so they asked me to get out of the tub. I was more then happy too, I was so HOT at this point. When I got out my support team took turns fanning me off to help me cool down. A couple hours in they asked me if I wanted to be checked, I eagerly agreed! Ruth (my midwife) asked me if I wanted to know how many centimeters, at first I was afraid....afraid she would say a low number like 4 or 5, but after a couple minutes I said "YES, please tell me!" When she told me I was about 8 centimeters I felt a great sense of relief. A couple hours later, I was dilated to 10, but the baby was high, so now we needed to work on getting the baby down. The midwife, assistant and my doula all were good about giving me suggestions, but mostly I went with what my body was telling me to do. I rocked back and forth and squatted during contractions. I remember punching the walls a few times, and saying once that I wanted to cuss, but I never did as far as I know! I remember having no sense of time and no idea what everyone around me was doing. Eventually I asked to go in the tub again, this time things were different. I moved around a lot and focused on bringing the baby down. Around 6am Ruth came into tell me she needed to go to another birth and that Lorri the owner of the Midwifery was coming in to take over at 7am. Lorri missed the birth! Around 630am I started feeling like I needed to push, wow...I never imagined that would feel how it did! The head kept poking out and people were commenting on all the hair. After several pushes I really gave it 10 times more then I thought I had in me and her head popped out into the water! WOW! Suddenly I was told to turn over onto all fours. ( I later found out the baby's shoulders were stuck so they wanted me to flip to help open up the pelvis.) With the next contraction she came out, I was really bummed that everyone in the room was able to see her except for me! I didn't hear any crying, and the midwife asked her assistant to bring over their equipment, right then I heard a cry! I remember just repeating, "I need to see her!" They helped me turn over with the cord still attached, and I held her in my arms in the water for a few minutes. Then they helped me get out of the tub, still holding her to my chest, with the cord still attached. The placenta wasn't coming out on it's own, so I did need some pitocin to help my body express it. They wrapped it up and made sure we were comfortable and left the 3 of us there to bond. She still hadn't left my arms, and the cord was still attached. ( we choose to do delayed cord cutting) Just as I was feeling like I need to go to the bathroom, the midwife came back in. They helped me up to use the restroom and get cleaned up, while daddy cut the cord and helped them weigh and measure Rose. After were dressed they served us breakfast and sparkling cider! We left around 1030am to go home, with our baby in tow! It was such a long night, but worth every minute! I'm so happy that we succeeded at having the birth we wanted. No hospital, no drugs, no unneeded interventions, able to eat and drink during labor, delayed cord cutting, and no hospital stay!

What is the Paleo Diet or Lifestyle?

It's basically eating how the cavemen ate, meat, fruits, and veggies. No grains or dairy. Pretty simple!

I truly believe this is a very healthy way to eat!

My goal is to start working towards a Paleo lifestyle. Should be pretty easy for me since I'm used to a low carb way of eating. The biggest challenge for me is cutting out dairy in the form of cheese and sour cream, but I've already been forced to do that anyway due to my breast fed baby having a dairy sensitivity.

I just downloaded this free Paleo cook book for weight loss to help give me some fresh inspiration!

For the most part I feel this has been a pretty great pregnancy! Morning sickness was minimal and manageable. No spotting, no heart burn, very few negatives. I do however have Gestational Diabetes. I was diagnosed with it early, around 13 weeks, they usually don't even test for this til 28 weeks or so. But because of my history, the checked early. For the most part I've been able to control it thru diet. "They" put me on a GD diet, which from the start I felt was too high in carbs for my body. But it did the job and kept my blood sugars within reason. I did however gain quickly on this diet!
The further along I get the less and less this "diet" is working for me, I see my blood sugars spiking.
I am signed up to deliver with South Coast Midwifery. Hoping and praying for a water birth, with very minimal interventions. However, my blood sugar has been spiking. SCM has me seeing a Perinatologist to keep an eye on this and on sweet baby Rose. At the first appointment he wanted to put me on a medication called Glyburide. My fasting blood sugar readings were too high. Instead, I talked to him about the "diet" I was told to be on and told him I felt it was too high carb for me and my body. I got the OK to go low carb! YAY! Immediately my blood sugars returned to almost normal ranges. In the 3 weeks I've been eating low carb I haven't gained any weight, which is actually a good thing. At my weight the Perinatologist doesn't want me to gain any more, and of course neither do I!
Blood sugar has spiked again, just in the mornings. And I've pinned it down to Dawn Phenomenom. A hormonal thing where you body releases sugar into your system right before waking to give you a boost of energy and wake you up! Fine for most people, not so great for people battling diabetes. I've tried several different natural ways around this. And I think I have finally found a fix! Wake up before this happens! So I've been getting up between 330am and 4am, Checking my fasting blood sugar, grabbing a small snack and heading to the gym! Yes, almost 8 months pregnant and I'm working out at the gym at 4am. So far this has been helping! Praying it continues to do the trick! If I am unable to keep the blood sugars where they want them to be and I get put on Meds, I will no longer be able to have the water birth I've dreamed of for so many years, and will be forced to deliver in the hospital. It won't be the end of the world, the most important thing is that our little Rose is both happy and healthy. And I'll do whatever I can to make sure that happens. I find comfort in knowing that the hospital I am now set to attend, (if need be) is one of the best hospitals in the area!

Tonight we attend our first "birth" class at Granola Babies in Costa Mesa. I'll update soon and let you know how that goes!Lori V.http://www.blogger.com/profile/02904008476309784154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-913212523698845966.post-38118893692536995202012-10-15T17:13:00.001-07:002013-01-10T06:02:15.600-08:00Sorry I've been Quiet!I haven't posted much lately because, in late July I found out I'm PREGNANT!
SO EXCITED!

I started this journey to health mainly for this reason. My weight loss is taking a break, as I nourish and feed this baby. The first couple of months were a little rough with morning sickness. Now I'm feeling great and am getting really excited!

3 Years ago I was borderline diabetic and turned it around thru diet and weight loss, so it was no surprise that I have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. The diet they have me on is one that I consider carb heavy, but when I eat low carb my blood sugar gets too high! I seem to be doing a great job of managing my blood sugar with this diet they have me on so far!

I'm due in March, will post more updates!Lori V.http://www.blogger.com/profile/02904008476309784154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-913212523698845966.post-76101950652943522262012-07-04T12:03:00.003-07:002012-07-04T12:03:59.720-07:005k!Ok I did it!
The weather was nice and chilly, even misty from time to time. I love when the weather is nice and cool for these things. Heat can turn a good time into a bad time pretty quickly!
Next year I MUST get better shoes and maybe wear two pairs of socks. After the first half or so I took off y shoe to find that I had two holes in my sock and was very quickly forming blisters. Shortly after the back of the same shoe started rubbing up against my ankle, rubbing off the skin. Well I kept going, just moved a little slower. Made it to the finish line, took me 59 minutes this year....after the pain started I really stopped trying to run/jog and ended up walking most of it.
Like I said before, I don't do this to be the fastest or to beat some magical time, I do this to DO this and to have fun! The time doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is that I got off my butt and did something active on a day that most people use as an excuse to sit around and be extra lazy!
Hope you all have a happy and safe 4th of July!
Well, it's that time again!
July 4th! Every year I run/jog/walk the 5k in downtown Huntington Beach. It's not about how fast I run, how good my time is or if I beat anybody. It's about having fun and being active!
I seriously was thinking about not doing it this year. I'm working 3 jobs and frankly, the thought of getting up at 530am on my day isn't very appealing. But, I was thinking, it would make a great new video for my new YouTube page! So I'm gonna do it for you all! Hopefully I'll even get a chance to post the video before tomorrow is over!

It's almost 9pm, so I'll be heading to bed soon. Wish me luck!Lori V.http://www.blogger.com/profile/02904008476309784154noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-913212523698845966.post-23536020469268053492012-06-25T19:20:00.003-07:002012-06-25T19:20:20.877-07:00YouTube Introduction

Yes they cost a bit more, but are worth it. Try growing some of your own!
For some people it's a completely new concept. But trust me, this is something you want to know about and be aware of. Right now in the USA it's virtually impossible to avoid GMO's unless you grow all your own food, and never eat anything processed and never eat out at a restaurant.
So what are these GMO's? AKA: The Terminator Seed
Here is the definition from Wikipedia:
A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes. Transgenic organisms, a subset of GMOs, are organisms that have inserted DNA from a different species. GMOs are the constituents of genetically modified foods.

Monsanto Monsanto Monsanto, another one you want to remember. Monsanto is responsible for GMO's. They are the makers of Round up and Round up ready products. In my honest opinion we should avoid buying things from this company.

Monsanto is engineering seeds by splicing in DNA from bee's, insects etc into our food. The most commonly genetically modified foods are soy, corn and canola. They are doing this to make the crops resistant to bugs, so that they can grow more, but over time it stops working and they need to modify it even more. Do you think we were meant to have DNA from insects in our food? Do you think we should be "playing God" like that? I think when we mess with our food, we mess with our lives. Anyone else think there could be a connection between GMO's and Cancer? Or between GMO's and Obesity?

These seeds are strong and overpowering, they are slowly diminishing our natural seeds. GMO's are taking over.
However, many countries have OUTLAWED GMO's! Why hasn't America followed suit? Obviously there's a reason they are getting outlawed elsewhere.
I'd have to write a book to inform you on all the negatives of GMO's, and frankly I'm not going to do that. There are enough books and documentaries out there already.

I suggest you check out some documentaries, many of them are available on Netflix.
Plateau Tips

For those on 5&1

For
most people, achieving success on this great program is simple and
doesn’t require any counting of calories or carbohydrates. Here are a
few tips that can help if you are experiencing slower weight loss or if
you reach a weight-loss plateau at some point in your program.

If you haven’t started exercising yet, now may be the time. Start
slowly, and gradually increase time and intensity as your body allows.
Remember, listen to your body! If you are already exercising, try
picking up the intensity or frequency of your workouts.

If you are exercising intensely, you may be pushing too hard- try to
avoid exessive "huffing and puffing" while exercising. Your body will
store fat if you are overworking!

In general, be aware of your total carbohydrate intake. If you are
experiencing slower weight loss or hit a plateau, we recommend staying
between 80-85 grams of carbs per day.

Try eating more "liquid" products for a few days, which are generally the lowest in carb content (aka Have a shake day!)

Choose meats from the leanest category and veggies from the lowest carb category for a week.

Avoid eating a MF snack product and a green wrapper bar in the same
day if you are experiencing slower weight loss or a weight-loss plateau.

Maintenance Bars (in the green wrapper) are higher in carbs than other Meals.

MF Snacks are higher in carbs than most non-MF snacks

If you like eating both snacks and bars, try to alternate days that
you eat a MF snack with days that you eat a green wrapper Maintenance
Bar. Refer to the list of non-MF snacks in your Quick Start Guide for
more options.

Ask your health coach about a support website to log your meals and
be sure you are eating the lean meat and green veggie meal as it is
recommended. Get the link from your health coach.

Make sure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces each
day. At least 64 ounces, but preferrably 100 ounces or more is best for
getting off a plateau!

Talk to your health coach about special products to add to your
program that will help you burn more calories and increase your
metabolism.

Make sure you are eating within a half hour of waking up, and never going longer than 3 hours between meals.
